Called, “Sword Dance and Shadowgraph,” this live interactive and computer generated imagery performance was recently filmed in Tokyo Japan, at the The Galaxy Theater in January and was performed by Taichi Saotome.

It involves a live actor on stage armed with a Katana who is defending himself many animated shadow adversaries on the screen located behind him. The result of the fight choreography matched with the CGI presentation on the projected screen is something pretty spectacular and definitely a cool treat for the eyes to witness.

Given his emphasis on constructed objects, the care with which he crafts every detail of each image and controls the overall composition, it is perhaps no surprise that this photographer’s background is not in the arts but in computer engineering and interactive design.

The rich three-dimensional complexity of each edited photograph is accomplished using exclusively two-dimensional computer editing tools and each work is based on a real photograph, manipulated, altered and added to in a layered and sequential process.

Many of the scenes are almost believable, at least for a moment – one could almost imagine a house being carried away in a storm, a church tower disappearing from view into the sky or a group of deranged construction works playing a giant-sized game of Tic-Tac-Toe.

While a signifcant portion of his work focuses on structures a fair amount of it also includes or revolves around individuals in impossible situations or performing surrealistic feats. Even with more organic subject matter, however, his approaches and edits are always a form of photo-art tempered with a scientific mind.

Even today, many documentary photographers will tell you they are influenced by the works of the Farm Security Administration in the 1930s and 40s. Under the direction of Roy Emerson Stryker, the FSA sent photographers to document the plight of the rural farmer during the Great Depression and the progress of New Deal programs. When the U.S. entered World War II, the photography program continued under the Office of War Information (OWI).

The best-known FSA photographs are in black and white. Less commonly seen are the color photos by FSA and OWI photographers, shot between 1939 and 1945. We present a selection from the works Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, FSA-OWI Collection.

Spritely is a simple plugin with only two key methods, sprite() and pan() both of which simply animate the background-image css property of an element. The difference between the two is that a 'sprite' image contains two or more 'frames' of animation, whereas a 'pan' image contains a continuous image which pans left or right and then repeats. Typically, in either case, you would use a png file (with or without transparency) for this. You might wish to use a transparent gif for Internet Explorer 6, though it probably won't look as good. Your html elements must already be the correct size you want the sprite to appear, but the background image will typically be larger than the html element, and the spritely methods reposition the background image within the html element.
